Your Side or Mine — Zip Hoodie

Your side or mine is a strange question to ask on a sofa with this much room. There is space for both of you, two coats and a fairly unreasonable dog. Yet the discussion has become very particular about the small area where your shoulders might meet. They move the cushion. You move closer. An extremely modest rearrangement of the living room has improved the evening beyond anything the cushion could have managed by itself.

You like this part: the ordinary conversation continuing while the distances change. The broad hoodie you wore over your favorite tee, the open zip, a sleeve pushed back because you are warm. You haven't had to become someone else to feel wanted. You are still making the same jokes, still objecting to their opinion of the film, just from a position where the objections can be delivered rather more quietly.

Later, the question comes up again. They have a usual side of the bed. So do you. Unfortunately it is the same side, an unexpected difficulty for two people who have spent the evening finding agreement very straightforward. You hear the case for each position. One involves a lamp. The other rests on many years of precedent, which is a lot to bring to someone else's bedroom.

You suggest the middle while the matter is being considered. They make room. The lamp, left without a client, carries on lighting the part of the bed nobody seems especially interested in.
