You had expected to hold the bags. This was the role you had prepared for, and it involved several advantages: stable ground, a view of the coats, and the right to look amused while other people paid to be moved around. Then someone bought you a ticket.

The ride is smaller than you remember. This is briefly reassuring, until you discover that the person controlling it has no interest in treating its modest size as a limitation. You place your feet where indicated. Your friends are trying to decide who should sit beside whom. The machine begins before they have resolved the social question.

For the next few minutes you are extremely easy to understand. Faster produces laughter. A sudden change of direction produces a noise you had not planned to make in public. The serious expression you brought with you has apparently been left somewhere beside the bags.

You are pleased you wore the teal hoodie. You liked it this morning with the faded jeans, and you like it now when you catch a glimpse of yourself in a bright pane of glass beside the exit. Hair rearranged, cheeks busy, somebody who has clearly been participating.

Your friend asks whether it was good. You explain that you had not anticipated the second turn. They say you made that fairly clear. There is another ride a little farther down. You stop to look at the height restriction, purely to establish the facts.
