You were not looking for a plant. This is important to establish, mostly for yourself. You had gone out to get a key cut, an errand with almost no botanical implications. But the little shop was next door, and you were waiting, and now you are having a serious conversation about which direction your windows face. The key is ready. You are not.

The plant has a slightly bent stem and the composure of someone who knows the interview is going well. You begin rearranging your home in your head. A lamp could move. That pile of unopened envelopes is not, strictly speaking, a permanent installation. Asked whether you have room, you say yes with the confidence of a person who is counting the space they might eventually clear.

You come home with the key and an entirely new responsibility, which you introduce as though a mutual friend has dropped in. There will be a little negotiation over the windowsill. You will probably look up something about watering, then look it up again from a less alarming source. For now it is nice to have brought home something you did not know the day was offering. The envelopes can sit somewhere else.
