You have already said goodbye. It went well. There was a clear ending, an exchange of good wishes, and even a small step in the correct direction. Then somebody remembered the thing about their brother. Now you are both standing at an angle, technically leaving, listening with the part of your body that has not yet committed to going home.

The story needs a little background. The background needs you to understand what the brother is like. You do, increasingly. Your bag changes shoulders. Someone tries a second goodbye, but this reminds you of something relevant, which would be rude to withhold now that you have all this context. Two people who could have continued sitting down have spent fifteen minutes carefully arranging themselves beside an exit.

There are worse uses of a doorway. Nobody is selling you anything. Nobody has asked you to become a better version of yourself by Tuesday. You are simply enjoying someone enough to make leaving unnecessarily elaborate. When you finally manage it, you get about six steps away before turning around to add one last thing. They are still there, fortunately. They had thought of something too.
