Water Chair — Oversized Tee

You would like a seat beside the water. You have been very clear about this, although the day keeps offering chairs in places where the water is in a glass. A perfectly good cafe. A perfectly good room. A perfectly good appointment during which you become interested in the small blue corner of a calendar.

It is not a complicated ambition. Somewhere to sit, something moving slowly in front of you, enough time that you stop checking how much of it is left. You do not need a remarkable coastline. The rather ordinary stretch at the end of the path would do beautifully. You know where the shade falls.

Your friend says you could go after everything else. This is technically encouraging. Everything else, however, has begun adding things to itself.

By late afternoon you have completed enough to make a modest escape look reasonable. The big tee is still on; you pick up a layer and leave before another useful thought can occur. On the path, a dog overtakes you, stops to inspect a leaf, and overtakes you again. Its afternoon has a rhythm you approve of.

The seat is available. Your friend arrives a little later with something to drink and asks whether you have been here long. You look at the water, then at the space beside you. You tell them you haven't been keeping a very accurate record. They sit down and make it harder to begin.
