When the alarm goes off, you are explaining snow to a crab.

The crab has several questions. Reasonable ones. Why does it fall like that? Where does the white go when it melts? Has anyone checked whether this happens to other kinds of water? You have made a promising start and would prefer not to leave them with such an incomplete account.

You open one eye. The room is familiar. The questions are still unusually interesting. You close the eye again for what you consider a short professional courtesy to the crab.

The conversation has moved on without you. There are now concerns about mountains. You appear to be holding a map you did not bring, and the crab is pointing out that quite a lot of the explanation depends on accepting the existence of winter. You have never had to defend winter before. It is more difficult than you expected.

When you finally get up, the petrol hoodie is on the chair and the day is considerably more advanced than your lecture. You tell somebody about the dream over breakfast. They ask what you said about the white.

You don't remember. This is irritating, because you are almost certain you had a very good answer.
