Under Here — Pullover Hoodie

You have become part of a small temporary group under an awning. Nobody arranged this. Ten minutes ago you were all going somewhere separately; now you share a strong interest in a patch of pavement about two feet beyond your shoes. Someone says it looks like it is easing off. Everyone looks. It is an optimistic interpretation of the available water.

There is usually one person prepared to test the theory. They lean forward, extend a hand, and bring back information the rest of you could already see. This does not diminish their contribution. You all appreciate the effort. A second person announces that they are going to make a run for it, takes three brisk steps, and returns at a speed that suggests the research has been conclusive.

Eventually the rain does lighten. The little gathering begins to dissolve, with the slight awkwardness of people who have been through something together but do not know each other's names. You exchange nods. Perhaps a smile. You may never meet again, although for a few damp minutes you had a shared plan and nobody tried to become the manager. As spontaneous arrangements go, you have had worse.
