Under Discussion — Long-Sleeve Tee

My brother says he doesn't have opinions about clothes. This is a remarkable claim from a person who has just asked whether I am going out in that.

I say yes. He considers the patterned long sleeve again, then says he didn't mean it in a bad way. I hadn't accused him of meaning it in a bad way. His clarification has opened a promising new part of the conversation.

We have always dressed differently. He likes to decide once and continue being right about it. I enjoy the occasional outfit that changes my idea of the rest of the wardrobe. Neither approach has prevented us from leaving the house, although he sometimes makes leaving sound like the principal achievement of getting dressed.

We walk down to meet the others. On the way, he stops outside a shop window. There is a jacket inside that I would never have chosen for him. He studies it quietly, then asks what I think.

I take my time. It is a good jacket. It would look excellent on him. I tell him so, and watch him try to receive this information as casually as somebody who has not developed an opinion.

He asks if the shop is open. I say it appears to be. A person with no interest in clothes goes in for a closer look, followed by someone who intends to let him enjoy it.
