You have chosen a place in the shade. A few other people had the same excellent idea and are quietly enjoying the absence of a schedule. Someone has opened a book without appearing especially committed to it. A dog is horizontal. Across the path, a pigeon continues to conduct its business with the air of a person who has been let down by everybody's attitude.

It approaches, reassesses, and approaches from another direction. You might have food. You might develop food if observed closely enough. Its confidence is impressive, particularly given the evidence. Around you, the afternoon has become wonderfully unambitious. People shift a little to make room. A conversation begins and pauses without anyone declaring it over. Even the dog declines a small opportunity to be involved.

The pigeon gives you one final look and moves on to a more promising bench. You admire the commitment while remaining pleased not to share its working hours. There is still shade here. There is still part of the afternoon you haven't filled. The book can stay open at the same page a little longer; it seems to be managing perfectly well.
