The Chair Gets the Clothes — Oversized Tee

You spent a very enjoyable twenty minutes deciding what to wear, followed by another ten pretending you hadn't. The good trousers. The tee with the generous shape and the picture you keep turning round to look at. A jacket that makes the whole arrangement seem slightly more respectable than your intentions. When they arrive, they notice. You let the compliment finish before saying thank you, a small but significant improvement on your usual habit of explaining the laundry.

Later, your carefully chosen outfit receives a different kind of appreciation. The jacket is assigned to a chair. Their shirt follows. The chair has spent years standing in the corner with no particular distinction, and now it has been entrusted with two people's entire presentation of themselves. It looks overwhelmed. You are inclined to leave it to develop professionally.

There is something excellent about being with someone who appreciates the getting dressed as much as the change of plans. They remember the color you wore last time. They ask about the picture. They find you funny before the evening has given you any reason to exaggerate your abilities. You want to look good when you arrive, and you would quite like tomorrow's coffee to involve the same company.

In the morning, one sleeve appears to belong to nothing. A sock has travelled. You stand beside the chair conducting a very informal search while they ask how you take your coffee. It turns out you have several preferences they haven't discovered yet.
