You take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly because you are going somewhere. This is your explanation at the beginning. Somewhere between leaving and arriving, you stop behaving like a person in transit and start behaving like someone who has found the thing they wanted to do. Sydney is passing on either side, there is water behind you, and the plan on your phone can look after itself for a while.

Your companion asks what you want to do when you get there. You say you have not quite finished doing this. It is an awkward answer to give a moving vessel, which has a destination and seems fairly committed to it. You try taking a photograph, then another, then decide that your collection of almost identical water photographs has enough evidence. The phone goes away. You watch the wake widen until it is no longer something you could point to and claim as yours.

At Manly, you enjoy being there, reassuring for everyone who believes journeys should end. You wander, find something to eat, and eventually turn back towards the wharf with suspicious enthusiasm. Your companion notices. You insist that returning is an essential part of any responsible outing. They agree, and suggest you choose a good place to look out this time. You have both become wonderfully serious about the least complicated part of the day.
