I sometimes take the ferry when the other way would be quicker. This is not information I volunteer to people who enjoy recommending a better connection. I know about the connection. It has a roof, several advertisements and an excellent record of getting me to the other side without showing me very much water.
Today I want the outside seat. I have put on the green cap with the orange peak, brought something to read, and left enough time to become interested in the shape of a passing boat. The boat is carrying what looks like an implausible number of small boats. I lower the book. It can wait until it has something equally good to offer.
There is a family nearby explaining the journey to a child. The child has independently identified the important features: water, a dog, more water, another dog. I find their account persuasive. Someone points out a large building. The child returns to the first dog, which has begun to do something.
At the other side I buy a drink and walk a little. I could stay. I could take the next one back. There is no grand itinerary waiting to be disappointed in me.
On the return, the outside seats are nearly empty. I sit on the opposite side for the different view. The book remains in my bag. I have reached the page about the boats carrying boats, and I am not finished with it.
