Still Playing — Zip Hoodie

The radio has a preferred place on the counter. You have tried moving it. In the new place it receives a great deal of weather and very little music, so you move it back and continue living under its rather modest terms.

It was there before the new kettle. Before the cupboard changed color. Before somebody tall enough to reach the top shelf began visiting often enough to learn where the cups are. The radio has accompanied all of this without asking to be photographed. Its one great ambition appears to be remaining at the volume you chose, an ambition it sometimes loses sight of when a song it likes comes on.

You are wearing the blue zip hoodie and getting ready to go when a voice you recognize introduces something you haven't heard in years. The zip is halfway up. Your keys are in your hand. You put them down for a minute, because the opening is better than you remembered and because there is nobody here to say you have heard this before.

Later, someone offers to find the track for you. They could send it immediately. You say thank you, then realize you would like to leave a small amount of the afternoon where it happened. The kettle clicks. The radio moves on to an entirely different subject. It has never been one to make a fuss about a good moment.
