Stairwell — Long-Sleeve Tee

You were going to go straight home. Then a window caught your attention, and behind the window was a room that appeared to lead into another room, which is how an entirely ordinary walk acquired a promising amount of depth. You weren't buying anything. You were having a look. These are activities with different consequences, although your friend enjoys pointing out how frequently the first begins with the second.

The place has a staircase. You are susceptible to a staircase when you don't know what is upstairs. It might be another room of chairs. It might be a terrible painting you will both enjoy disliking. It might simply be the point from which the staircase comes back down. You would prefer to establish this through direct experience.

'What are you hoping to find?'

You haven't decided. That is half the attraction. The woman coming down the stairs has a patterned top in colors you wouldn't have thought to put together. You let her pass, then look back because you want another look at the sleeves. Your friend catches you doing it. You admit you were thinking about your old black trousers. Apparently they, too, have come out looking for company.

Upstairs, there is a very good chair and a frankly astonishing lamp. Your friend looks at you. You look at the lamp. It is possible that you will be taking the long way home.
