“Is that the person?”

You close your eyes. Your friend has attempted a whisper using a technique that mainly involves making their normal voice more intense. The room is quiet enough for the sentence to enjoy excellent conditions.

“Which person?” you say, abandoning several years of context in the hope of saving the next thirty seconds.

They explain. Quietly, in their opinion. You have worn the plum hoodie because this was supposed to be an informal afternoon, and now you are trying to become a less memorable part of it. The person by the shelves turns slightly. Your friend smiles at them with the radiant innocence of somebody who believes discretion has already been achieved.

Outside, you explain the difficulty. Your friend says they didn't say a name. This is true. They supplied enough other information to make a name feel unnecessary.

You are still laughing when the person comes out behind you and says hello. Your friend introduces themselves at an ordinary volume. It is the quietest they have sounded all afternoon.
