Sprawl — Oversized Tee

The first hour went very well. You moved from one end of the sofa to the other, found the part of the cushion that had been waiting for you, and put your feet somewhere that made the room briefly look like it had been rented to a much larger person. There is tea within reach. The shirt is enormous. Nobody can accuse you of failing to use the available space.

A message arrives: what are you up to? This is a surprisingly difficult question to answer when everything is going according to plan. You could say nothing, but nothing fails to account for the window being open, the album you have finally listened to without washing something, or the particular pleasure of wearing a deep plum tee with your oldest trousers and having nowhere to improve the outfit for. You settle for not much. A beautifully compact account of a fairly ambitious afternoon.

There will be a point when you need lunch. You are willing to acknowledge this, although you see no reason to make lunch feel encouraged. For now, the next song has started. Someone upstairs drops something large, then apparently drops the explanation. You consider getting up to look out of the window. The thought completes a small, elegant circuit and returns without you.

Your phone lights up again. They've sent a photograph of a queue. You feel for them. You really do. You feel for them from a position that has taken you most of the afternoon to achieve.
