The first photograph is mostly your elbow. This is useful information about the distance between the timer and the place where you intended to be standing. You move the phone a little, try again, and arrive with the expression of somebody who has just been summoned unexpectedly.

You had wanted a photograph because you liked how you looked. A modest ambition, now involving a chair, two books and a disagreement with the angle of a window. The orchid top is exactly right. The little raised collar supplies just enough ceremony for a photograph taken in your own room, and you have finally found the earrings you spent last week accusing the house of eating.

By the fifth attempt you are enjoying yourself. You try a serious face and discover the relative everyone still invites because leaving her out would become a much larger occasion. You laugh at it, reach for the phone, and accidentally produce the best picture so far. This feels like an unfair reward for abandoning several carefully considered decisions.

You keep taking them anyway. There are expressions you have never seen because nobody else has been around to ask you to hold them. One is excellent. One suggests you are about to announce a fairly serious problem with the soup. You save both. The second might be useful if anyone mistakes your good looks for an agreeable disposition.

Later a friend asks who took the photograph. You say you did. They ask whether there are more. You send the one about the soup without explanation. Their reply comes back quickly: what has happened? You decide to let the picture keep some of its authority.
