On your first trip together, every quiet moment briefly feels like a question. Are they tired? Bored? Regretting the decision to spend several consecutive days with someone who brought three nearly identical chargers? In Seoul, walking beside Cheonggyecheon, you keep finding things to say. You point out a bridge that they can plainly see. They agree that it is a bridge. An encouraging start.

Beneath it, you pause and begin explaining something you read that morning, then lose the end of the sentence. They wait. You admit you are trying to make sure they are having a good time. They look at you for a moment and say they are, although they had not realised there would be quite so much commentary. This is rude, accurate, and delivered while taking your hand, which makes it difficult to dispute convincingly.

For the next stretch, you let the conversation arrive when it wants to. You notice how easily they walk beside you when neither of you is trying to be interesting. Later they ask what you are thinking about. You say the bridge, obviously; you have developed a very serious interest. They laugh and squeeze your hand. There will be plenty to talk about over dinner. For now, you are getting rather good at being here together.
