Your friend has become very interested in the light in your kitchen. This began with a plant cutting in a glass you were supposed to return. You sent a photograph when the first root appeared. They replied with three hearts. A month later, you sent another photograph, and they replied, 'How much light does that window get?'

You had thought the plant was a gift. It turns out ownership has transferred, but your friend has retained the right to be disappointed.

Now there are updates. A new leaf earns a message. A slightly curled leaf earns a much longer one, during which you learn that your friend has opinions about almost every window you own. When they visit, they greet you warmly and then look over your shoulder. You move aside so they can see how their former plant is getting on.

The next visit is at their place. You have put on the green crewneck, found the book you promised to lend them and taken one more photograph before leaving. They meet you at the door with a compliment about the color. You thank them, pleased, then ask whether they were talking to you or the cutting visible on your phone. They say both. In the kitchen, you sit on the counter while they explain how they finally got a drawer to close. You admire the drawer. They ask to see the photograph properly.

Eventually your friend asks for a cutting. You try to hand it over without making anything of the request. Unfortunately, you have already put it in a glass and taken a photograph beside the original plant. You send both. Their reply arrives almost immediately: 'I'd like my glass back as well.'
