You don't know these people, but you have begun to expect them. The person who always walks a little faster than everyone else. The pair who appear to be continuing yesterday's conversation. The man who stops in the same place to rearrange something that apparently cannot be arranged before he leaves home. Their absence would be surprisingly noticeable.
Your own place in this small recurring cast is less clear to you. Perhaps you are the one who checks the same pocket twice. Perhaps somebody has privately named you after the day you tried to eat a pastry in a difficult wind. You would rather be remembered for something else, although the pastry did make an impression on several people and one parked bicycle.
One morning, the fast walker is going slowly. You almost ask whether everything is all right, then discover that this is the sort of question you can ask a person whose name you don't know. They smile and answer. The following day you exchange a proper greeting, and the route feels slightly less anonymous. You are still going about your separate business. It now includes a moment in which you are pleased to see each other.
