Morning, says the person opening the shop. Morning, you say, although it is closer to lunchtime and neither of you appears interested in taking the matter further.

At the corner, somebody asks whether it is getting warmer. You offer a view. Near the crossing, a person you know mainly by their dog tells the dog to stop looking at your bag. You tell the dog there is nothing in it for them. This is not entirely true, but the dog has already lost interest in your contribution.

You like these little exchanges. They are too small to report later and too much a part of the day to call nothing. The teal crewneck has become familiar to the person at the counter. They notice when you come in wearing something else. You know when their day is going well by how they say the total.

Sometimes you have more to tell one another. A window is being replaced. A bus has changed its mind about where it stops. Someone's dog has learned a command it intends to interpret selectively. Other days, morning is enough.

On the way home, the shop is closing. See you, the person says. You lift a hand. There is no arrangement in place, but you both sound reasonably sure.
