“The parcel is humming,” your friend says. Nobody has asked them to begin a story. There has simply been a pause long enough for something to happen in it.

“Wrong address,” someone offers. “It belongs to the choir.”

“The choir has moved.”

“Not all of it.”

You like a table that will cooperate with this sort of nonsense. Within a minute the parcel contains one very small tenor who refuses to come out until somebody has checked the acoustics. Your friend taps the bread basket. Another person says the basket is already booked. You suggest the kitchen, which is rejected for being too close to the audience. The audience consists of four people and someone looking for a clean fork.

There is a pleasure in making something up together without appointing the person who is in charge of being funny. A good detail gets borrowed. A poor one receives a surprisingly generous continuation. You arrived in your butter crewneck expecting a drink and something to eat. The evening has become considerably more elaborate. Your friend has been waiting all week to tell you something serious. You will listen properly when they are ready. For now, the tenor has demanded a dressing room.

Later, as the plates are being cleared, someone asks where the humming parcel was actually meant to go. There is a pause. You all look toward the door, as though an answer might be standing on the other side. Your friend says they should probably check the label. An extraordinary suggestion, this late in the evening.
