You check the time in Reykjavík and immediately check it again, as though your phone might apologise and offer a more plausible answer. It is June, the evening has carried on being light, and you have casually proposed another walk at an hour when you are usually negotiating with the toothpaste. Your friend asks whether you are tired. You say a little, in the optimistic tone of someone whose next activity should probably be horizontal.

There is something wonderfully persuasive about a sky that has not finished. You keep adding small things. One more street. A look at the water. A conversation that begins as a quick remark and develops into a detailed account of a holiday neither of you took together. Nothing feels late until you yawn halfway through your own sentence and briefly lose the ability to defend your plan.

Back in the room, you draw the curtains with the satisfaction of finally contributing something to the evening. Darkness, at least in this small area, will be your responsibility. Your friend is already laughing at the photo you took while insisting you felt perfectly awake. You look delighted and slightly unfinished. Tomorrow you may manage your time more sensibly. For now, you are very pleased with how much day you found.
