Pour Another — Oversized Tee

You had meant to leave after the food. Then your host remembered the beginning of a story they had told you the end of last time, and you discovered that the beginning contained most of the useful information. Nobody was late, apparently. They had gone to the wrong wedding. This improves the end of the story enormously.

A plate moves. Someone brings the bottle over. You ask if you should help clear up and are told to stay where you are, which you interpret as a statement of considerable affection. The chalk tee has survived dinner, the room is warm, and your friend is preparing to explain how a person attends forty minutes of an unfamiliar wedding before becoming suspicious.

There are practical reasons to finish an evening. You have mentioned two of yours already. They sound perfectly reasonable while the other person is in the kitchen, and less convincing when they return carrying something small to share. You move a glass to make room.

Eventually the story reaches the photograph. Your host finds it on their phone. Several very happy strangers are having an excellent day, and there, toward the back, is your friend looking as though they cannot quite place the groom. You are glad you stayed. You ask them to start at the invitation.
