Picnic — Low-Profile Cap

The invitation says to bring something to sit on. You bring a blanket, a sandwich, a second sandwich for the person who will have misunderstood the invitation, and a cap you have already tried with three different shirts. There are priorities. Yours include lunch and the blue.

At the park, your friends have found a very small area in which everybody's idea of shade is technically represented. Half a leg is in the sun. One person has placed a bag under a tree and is treating this as sufficient evidence that the whole group is beneath it. You put the blanket down. The view is mostly the back of somebody else's picnic, but their dog is excellent.

You like the little check above a plain tee. Cobalt and butter, with the dark peak making a clear line; the sort of small decision that makes leaving home feel more enjoyable than the errands before it. Someone asks where you got it. You turn so they can see. The sandwich you brought for them is already halfway gone.

For a while there is nothing to arrange beyond what to pass next. You hear a story you know and enjoy being told it again. The dog visits, considers your remaining sandwich, and sits with the composure of someone willing to wait. Your friend says it is a beautiful afternoon. You agree, while moving the sandwich to the other side.
