Pear House — Oversized Tee

I would live there, you say, about a place that has just been described with no regard for planning, weather or the location of a reasonable food shop. There is a room at the top with a window you can open. Something grows over the doorway. The bath is apparently outside, which you decide to admire before asking any of the questions that might ruin it. Within minutes you have chosen where to put a chair.

This is what you like about a good story. It gives your taste somewhere new to go. You can imagine the color of the walls, the person you would invite, the book you would begin and probably leave open beside the bed. Your friend has barely finished describing the staircase and you are already suggesting a larger kitchen. Even the entirely imaginary version of you has opinions about storage.

You are still talking about it when you go out that evening, in the loose blue tee you put on before you had a destination. Your friend has found the only table beneath a large yellow lampshade. You approve immediately. Somebody brings drinks, somebody wants to know about the house, and by the time you have repeated the description it has acquired a balcony.

Your friend asks whether there is room for guests. Of course there is. You have only just moved into the story and are already being generous with the spare room.
