There are people who can buy one bunch of flowers and call the matter settled. You admire their clarity, although it offers very little help when the second bunch is an excellent color beside the first. Soon the vase is making a rather ambitious statement about its available space. You turn it. Something falls outward. You decide that was the direction the arrangement needed.
Your friend says it is a lot. You agree, because it is. The room has become more interesting from several angles, and there is something deeply satisfying about having made an ordinary table look as though it has plans for the weekend. You move the fruit bowl to give the flowers a little more room. This causes the fruit bowl to look neglected. A second arrangement begins.
The same appetite occasionally gets involved in getting dressed. You try a rich color with another rich color, then discover a pale one that makes the whole thing rather difficult to leave on the hanger. A broad crewneck, the shape of the sleeves, a generous pattern above plain trousers: you like an outfit that has enjoyed being put together. You are perfectly capable of wearing something quiet tomorrow.
When somebody asks what the occasion is, you consider mentioning that you have rearranged the sitting room. It would be an honest answer. Instead, you say you liked the colors. They look again, which gives you the additional pleasure of watching the colors begin their case.
