Out the Door — Heavyweight Tee

You have looked out of the window, checked the time, and considered whether the trip is really necessary. It probably is, although necessary has become a flexible word since you sat down. There are shoes by the door. They seem to have accepted the plan much earlier than you did.

Getting outside often involves a surprisingly elaborate discussion with yourself. You could go now. You could finish one small thing first. You could look for the thing you need to take, discover something else you meant to deal with, and build an entirely new afternoon around avoiding a perfectly ordinary departure. Then, eventually, you stand up and leave before the conversation can reopen.

A few minutes later, somebody moves aside to let you pass. There is a smell of something being cooked, a dog carrying itself with great importance, and a person laughing into a phone. Your day has other people in it now. You may still do exactly what you came out to do. You may also stop somewhere on the way back, having remembered that leaving the house was partly an excuse to be somewhere else.
