Oddly Specific — Oversized Tee

You made the mistake of asking a person who knows about knots whether this was the right knot.

It is not a mistake you regret. You are now sitting on a low wall while they explain why the one you used can become difficult in a situation you had not imagined your small piece of cord ever entering. They have a better one. In fact they have several, each with a reason to exist and a surprisingly specific way to disappoint you.

The best part is their concentration. The little pause before they show you the turn again. The pleasure when your hands finally do what theirs have been doing. You had put on the cobalt tee and come out expecting to help carry something. Instead you have been admitted to an entire new category of attention.

You ask another question. They check that you really want the longer answer. You do. It turns out that the longer answer contains a story about a badly tied boat, an argument with a stranger, and the discovery that being right about the knot did not improve the stranger's afternoon.

Later you remember the useful part. You also remember the way your friend looked when they realized you were still listening. The cord is secure now. There is probably a better way to finish it, but you are saving that question for next time.
