You found somewhere to sit and immediately began considering what to do with the opportunity. Read something. Reply to something. Have a thought impressive enough to justify the bench. It is remarkable how quickly an empty half-hour can acquire a supervisor. Meanwhile, the person at the other end is watching a leaf and appears to have received perfectly satisfactory results.

Perhaps you only wanted to be outside without going anywhere for a while. Your feet have done their part. The street can continue without your assistance. A dog circles the same small area with the seriousness of an expert, then sits down too. Nobody asks it whether the outing was productive. It has been out; this seems to cover the matter.

A little later, someone asks whether you're waiting for anything. You could say yes, because it makes sitting still easier to explain. But nothing is pressing. You are just here, letting people pass, noticing a conversation in pieces, giving the leaf another chance to do whatever the other person found so absorbing. Eventually it moves. A small but well-timed development.
