You got dressed like this because you wanted to. This appears to have created a few optimistic interpretations, but the neckline is not an appointment and the color has made no promises on your behalf. You like the way you look. You are having a drink with your friends. If the evening requires a further explanation, it can speak to someone less beautifully occupied.

Of course you may flirt. Flirting can be an excellent use of ten minutes, particularly with someone who understands that ten pleasant minutes need not arrive attached to a claim on the rest of the night. You enjoy a good compliment. You give one back when you mean it. Across the room, a friend is making the small theatrical gesture that means she has found somewhere to sit, and you are quite prepared to interrupt a promising conversation for a very good chair.

The fitted tee was worth the extra look before you left. The color close to your face, the sleeves with those trousers, the little pleasure of recognizing yourself in a reflection before anybody else has offered an opinion. You want clothes that make getting ready enjoyable even on an evening whose only lasting romance is with your own excellent taste.

Later, you may go home with company. You may go home by yourself and eat something absurdly good over the sink. Tonight you are leaning toward the second option. There is cheese in the fridge, and you have been thinking about it with increasing tenderness.
