By the third morning in New York City, you have developed the walk of a person who knows exactly where they are going. This is impressive, given that you have just passed the same corner twice. Your friend suggests the Staten Island Ferry. You ask how much of the day it will take. The question comes out with the grim urgency of someone charging their own holiday by the hour.

The ferry carries you between Lower Manhattan and Staten Island. Here is a city offering to move you across the water while you sit down, an arrangement your feet endorse immediately. You begin by trying to name everything outside. Then you stop naming things and look at them. Your friend leans back. Neither of you speaks for a while. It is the first attraction of the trip that has not required you to decide whether you are enjoying it quickly enough.

Later, when you compare favourite moments, this little stretch of being carried along has somehow got ahead of several things with advance bookings. You feel slightly disloyal to the spreadsheet. It worked very hard to make you interesting. Your friend says you looked happy on the boat. You insist that sitting down was simply excellent planning, and make a private note to plan some more.
