Mothlight — Long-Sleeve Tee

The best part of getting dressed can be the moment before anybody else sees it. The room is still yours. You have the music you want, a small amount of time, and a top whose colors keep sending you back for another look. You turn once, then again, considering whether the dark trousers have been getting too much credit.

You had thought about something quieter. It is waiting on the bed, looking perfectly capable of attending. But tonight you want the pale pattern against the dark ground, the close long sleeves, the pleasure of having chosen the interesting thing without waiting to discover how everybody else interprets the occasion.

A friend sends a photograph of two possible outfits. You select the more elaborate one. They reply that you would say that. This is one of the advantages of having friends who know you: certain discussions can begin several paragraphs in. You send back your own picture. There is a gratifying pause before their answer.

By the time you meet, the evening has already been enjoyable for quite a while. You notice what they changed. They notice what you kept. At the first doorway, you both stop long enough to admire the color of the room beyond it, which is doing rather more than the place outside suggested. Your friend looks at you. Apparently you have both chosen well.
