The song ends and they start to move away. You catch their attention and ask for another one. They say you have just had three. You are aware of this. You were present for all three, and the experience has given you useful grounds for requesting a fourth.

They look toward the friends they came with. One of those friends is watching with the expression of someone who has already made alternative arrangements. You appreciate the efficiency.

At first you were careful about where to stand, how close to come, what the small changes in their expression might mean. Now there is a much more agreeable amount of information. They step back toward you. You like the way they do it. You like having asked.

You are warm, the fitted tee was the right decision, and the room has become a collection of things you can attend to later. The next song is slower than the last. They ask whether that changes anything. You tell them it seems like an opportunity to develop a different part of the conversation.

Afterward, you find your friends and discover that they have kept very thorough track of your absence. You decline to provide the account they appear to be hoping for. Then the person you were dancing with comes over and asks whether you would like to leave together.

You say yes. Your friends look pleased with themselves, as though this has happened because they counted accurately.
