Mixed Company — Oversized Tee

I joined the book group because I wanted to hear what other people had noticed. This remains my position, although I now know that two of them principally noticed the cover and one has been reading a different book with a similar title. We are all contributing what we can.

There is a character I like whom everybody else finds intolerable. I begin defending them cautiously, then with the confidence of someone who has apparently agreed to be their solicitor. A friend asks whether this is really about the book. Of course it is about the book. We would both prefer not to discuss why I have begun mentioning circumstances that do not appear in it.

I like the room when it gets this lively. A big terracotta tee, trousers I can sit around in, people whose taste I respect enough to disagree with. The person reading the other book offers a comparison. It is surprisingly useful. We stop asking them to catch up.

At the end we choose the next one. Four people recommend things. One person asks if it is short. I look across at my friend and can tell they have already thought of something to say about my unfortunate client. I bring them a biscuit before they begin.
