Mid-Sentence — Fitted Tee

“And then she bought the boat.”

This is how your friend greets you. You haven't seen them for three weeks, and for a moment you are delighted by the possibility that all the missing information will arrive in the correct order. It does not. There is a boat now. You will have to work backward from there.

You put your bag down and ask whether this is the same person who disliked water. Your friend looks pleased. They had hoped you would remember that part. Soon you are standing beside a wall in the afternoon light, both of you halfway through the conversation while the ordinary business of meeting up waits patiently to one side. You chose the fitted cream tee because you liked it with the dark trousers. It has turned out to be an excellent outfit for abandoning your original destination.

What you enjoy is how little needs restarting. The same unfinished joke is still available. A name brings back a whole room. You can disagree about the boat without first establishing your position on the person who bought it, although you do ask whether anybody has checked what happens when it rains.

Eventually your friend says it is good to see you. You say it is good to see them too. Then you ask where she intends to keep it. Apparently this is where the story becomes interesting.
