'She wore it everywhere.'

You know. You remember it arriving before the rest of the outfit, catching the light when she leaned over the table to tell you something she considered too interesting to remain seated for.

The brooch has been in your drawer for a while. You like taking it out. Wearing it has felt like a larger decision. It comes with several vivid outfits already attached to your memory, and none of them have much in common with the way you get dressed on an ordinary Thursday.

Today you try it beside the bronze top. The open neck gives it some room. You move it twice, step back from the mirror, and discover that it looks surprisingly at home with the trousers you bought last month. This makes you pleased in a way you were not quite prepared for.

At lunch someone admires it. You tell them who it belonged to, then begin describing the way she used to arrive places. Your friend asks a question. You remember another detail, this one involving a hat that had a very ambitious relationship with doorways.

The brooch catches the light while you are talking. You touch it without thinking.
