'You look very good.'

'I know. I was hoping you would notice.'

This is allowed to be the entire exchange. You do not have to explain how little time it took, identify a problem with the outfit, or mention that the light is being unusually cooperative. They have paid attention. You have enjoyed it. There is already enough happening to support a perfectly pleasant evening.

They laugh, which is what you hoped they would do. Then you tell them the thing you noticed when they arrived. You are specific. Their expression changes in a way that makes specificity seem an excellent habit.

You like getting dressed with someone in mind. You also like the part before anybody else has seen you, when the patterned tee is on and you turn once in front of the mirror because the whole arrangement pleases you. The second opinion is welcome. It does not need to arrive carrying responsibility for the first.

At the table, they ask whether you are always this sure of yourself. You tell them no, but you prefer to make good use of the occasions when it happens. They say they feel fortunate. You agree that the evening has several promising features.

A little later they compliment you again. You ask whether they have noticed something new. They have. You lean closer and invite them to be as particular as they like.
