Locket — Long-Sleeve Tee

You own a small necklace that makes an uncomplicated outfit considerably less uncomplicated to explain. It isn't valuable in a way anybody could helpfully insure. A friend gave it to you wrapped in a receipt, having remembered the present and forgotten the existence of wrapping paper.

You like the necklace. You like that they carried it around all afternoon, periodically checking the pocket with the expression of someone transporting a very small emergency. When people ask where it came from, you sometimes tell them that part. Sometimes you simply say it was a present. Both answers are accurate. One takes longer and requires you to explain your friend.

Locket leaves room for it. The open squared neckline, the dark plum and narrow apricot edge: you want those colors near your face, with the little pendant resting in the space above them. You could leave the necklace off and still want the top. Tonight you put it on, take it off to compare, and put it on again.

At dinner someone notices. They lean closer, then ask the question. Your friend is sitting beside you, so you give them the opportunity to describe their excellent taste. They begin quite confidently. You mention the receipt. They say the wrapping was deliberately understated, which is a generous account of a bag they bought for the sandwich. You let them continue. They remember choosing it in considerably more detail than you knew.
