Let yourself in, they say. They're still making dinner, and there is no reason for you to stand outside while something in a pan develops an opinion about being left alone. You use the key. The ordinary little sound it makes is surprisingly nice.

Inside, they call your name from the kitchen. You find a glass, put your bag somewhere that will probably be wrong, and stand in the doorway appreciating a view of them you have seen before and continue to recommend. They ask whether you've had a good day. You give the short answer. They give you a longer look, which improves several parts of it.

There is a particular pleasure in being wanted on an ordinary evening, when nobody has booked anything and the lighting consists largely of the light being on. You can arrive in the broad hoodie you like, put your own music on while they cook, and discover that being comfortable with someone has done nothing to reduce the attraction. Sometimes it gives the attraction a considerably better place to stand.

You offer to help. They ask you to taste something, then remain rather closer than the spoon requires. It needs salt, you tell them. They say they knew you would be useful.

You leave the key beside your bag. Later, when dinner is ready, neither of you can remember where you put the glasses. You found them perfectly easily when you arrived.
