You have packed almost everything. The crewneck you chose for the journey is already on, and you have caught yourself liking the two colors together in a mirror that has lately had rather a lot to observe. Only three things remain. A book. A charger. The person sitting on the edge of the bed making suggestions that do not appear anywhere on the packing list.
You could finish very quickly. You are a competent adult with extensive experience of putting a charger into a bag. Instead, you ask them to pass it to you, despite being at least as close to it as they are. They recognize the arrangement and cooperate. For a while the charger becomes part of a much more interesting exchange, before being allowed to return to its original career.
The bag stands open beside the door, an optimistic distance from either of you. You were dressed to leave several minutes ago. They ask whether you have forgotten anything, and you tell them you are trying to remember. This is technically true. You have forgotten the question you were about to ask before they smiled.
Eventually you check the time. This produces a brief display of practical behavior. You close the bag, find the book under a pillow, and establish that the charger has somehow left your possession a second time. They offer to help you look.
You say you have had quite enough help. They smile in a way that suggests they are willing to let you make a more accurate statement. Outside the room, the rest of the day continues to believe you are on your way.
