Lacuna — Long-Sleeve Tee

There is a blank space where the sign used to be. Your friend says the shop must have closed. You say the sign may simply have left.

They ask where a sign would go. You suggest somewhere it doesn't have to tell everybody the same thing all day. Your friend considers this while you wait for the light to change. By the time you cross, the sign has found a smaller job near the sea and is saying open only when it feels like it.

You like a walk that leaves room for this. The errands will get done. You have the patterned long sleeve on, the bag you meant to bring, and a companion willing to spend two streets considering whether a sign could miss its old window.

A week later, you pass the shop again. There is fresh paint and a new name. The explanation is entirely sensible. You tell your friend. They say they hope the old sign is getting some rest.

You do too. There are probably more useful things to imagine. Neither of you seems to need one.
