Knotwork — Oversized Tee

You have an answer. It has nine letters. The space has eight.

For a while you look at both of these facts as though one of them might develop a little flexibility. Your friend asks what the clue says. You read it out. They suggest a word that fits perfectly and is, in every practical respect, a better answer. You dislike how quickly this has happened.

The crossword has been on the table all afternoon, receiving attention between other things. Someone answers a call. Someone finds a biscuit. You return to a clue you have already read so often that ordinary words are beginning to look invented. The chalk tee and dark trousers were chosen for going out, but you have become very comfortable staying exactly where the question is.

There are people who make solving things feel like a competition. Your friend makes it feel like company. They explain the answer you missed, enjoy the one you found, and allow you a respectable interval in which to claim you were nearly there.

By the last corner, you are both stuck. You make tea and come back with a suggestion so unlikely that your friend laughs before counting the letters. Then they stop laughing. They write it in. It fits.

You leave the finished page on the table for a while. A modest piece of evidence that persistence can occasionally be confused with knowing what you are doing.
