It is a good question. You know because you have been composing a less useful version for the last twenty minutes. Something involving how late it is, or whether they have far to go, or the fact that you have both stopped pretending to look for a taxi. They have saved you several sentences.

You say yes, and discover that agreeing can have a surprisingly long afterlife. There is the answer itself. There is the way they look at you when they hear it. There is a short, very enjoyable interval in which neither of you has to interpret anything.

Later, you will remember the street more vividly than it deserves. A shop light. The shape of a tree. A small piece of conversation that had no particular importance until this happened beside it. You will remember liking the tee you wore, too, although at the time you had stopped giving the outfit your full attention.

They ask whether you would like to see them again. You tell them that the questions are going very well tonight.

You do eventually find a way home. The city has continued to provide transport despite your neglect of it. On the journey, you receive a message saying they had a good time. It is remarkably restrained, considering the available vocabulary. You begin a reply, consider being equally restrained, and decide they have already had enough practice asking the useful question.
