It was going to be a very small favor. Could you hold this end while someone got the door? Of course. Now you are walking backward, providing most of the steering with your eyebrows, and learning that 'left' depends rather heavily on whose afternoon you are describing. You didn't know this person a minute ago. You currently know quite a lot about their ability to reverse.

There is a peculiar ease in being useful before you have had to introduce yourself. Here is the awkward thing. Here is the bit nobody can reach. You take an end, someone takes the other, and a situation that was going badly acquires a reasonable chance. The conversation can catch up later, assuming either of you still has enough breath for it.

When it is finally down, you both straighten up and admire the distance covered. Three steps, perhaps four. An impressive journey for something that wanted to stay where it was. A thank-you changes hands. You continue your day with no new lifelong obligation, just a brief acquaintance and the knowledge that somebody else has also been overruled by the width of that doorway.
