However — Fitted Tee

I have changed my mind about the film.

This should be a simple thing to say to a friend. Unfortunately, I did not give my previous opinion simply. I supplied examples. I made a comparison. At one point I used the word unforgivable about a scene in which nothing substantially worse occurred than two people talking beside a car.

My friend listened to all of it. Then they said they liked the film, and I behaved generously toward this information for the remainder of the evening. I even asked which part they liked, although I recognize now that the question had more than one possible use.

I watched it again last night. The car scene is very good.

Today I meet them wearing the blue fitted tee, which has been easier to choose than an opening sentence. We walk for a while. They tell me about their week. I consider waiting until we sit down, then until we have ordered, then until an improbable event gives me a natural way to mention the film.

Eventually I say it. My friend turns toward me with a look of such pure, undiluted pleasure that I regret depriving them of this for even a minute. They ask whether I would like to revisit unforgivable. I say I would not. They say that is fair, and then ask about the comparison.

We spend the next half hour discussing a film we both like. It is a considerably better conversation. I let them have the last word, although they appear to have brought several.
