Hard to Behave — Fitted Tee

'Behave,' they say, in a voice that suggests they have not given the instruction their full support. You ask what, specifically, has been causing difficulty. This is an unfair question. You know perfectly well which remark started it, and you have spent the last several minutes finding increasingly flimsy reasons to say something else from a little closer.

They try to return to the card game. You admire the effort. When you arrived, they said they liked the fitted tee, then lost track of a perfectly simple question about drinks. You have been giving them a difficult evening ever since. Their hand contains an excellent possibility, apparently, although they have been looking at you for so long that the cards may wish to seek another player.

You offer to help. They say you have helped quite enough. Across the table, your friends begin discussing whether either of you remembers whose turn it is. This is your favorite kind of teasing: someone paying attention to the actual person in front of them, leaving room for an answer, looking delighted when the answer is less polite than expected. You ask a question that makes them put the cards down.

Eventually the game ends. You may have won; the record is unclear. They ask whether you would like to go somewhere quieter. You ask if you are expected to behave there as well. This time they take a little longer over the instruction.
