Fuck, you look good.

They say it in the doorway, before putting down their bag, which improves the compliment considerably. You had hoped to have an effect. You enjoyed choosing the color, enjoyed the long sleeves with those trousers, enjoyed the moment in the mirror when the outfit became exactly what you wanted. Still, it is lovely to have an independent observer temporarily lose the ability to begin a conversation normally.

Thank you, you say. Just that. No explanation of when you bought anything, no apology for the time you spent getting ready. You let them look, and discover that you are quite happy to let the pause go on a little longer. When they remember the bag, they put it down in the wrong place. Neither of you cares very much about the correct place.

Later, they ask if you knew what you were doing. You say you had a few hopes. This encourages a level of honesty that you find extremely attractive. They tell you which part they noticed first. You tell them you chose it partly because you were looking forward to seeing them. It is a good deal more fun than pretending all this happened to you by accident.

The evening finally begins to resemble the evening you planned. There is dinner, something to drink, a question about your day. Halfway through answering, you catch them looking again. You don't repeat the question. You are enjoying the answer.
