Fountain — Long-Sleeve Tee

The bath is a wildly ambitious use of two o'clock. At two o'clock, people expect you to be available for things. They do not expect you to have selected music, found the large towel, and become personally interested in how the light falls across a tiled wall.

You had planned a shower. A shower is an efficient arrangement: you enter as one version of yourself and leave slightly later with a short list of wet objects. Today you would like the longer arrangement. You move the shampoo bottles out of the way as though preparing a room for somebody important.

There is no occasion. This keeps improving the occasion. You read a few pages, put the book somewhere dry, and discover that doing nothing with both hands is a surprisingly complete activity. Outside, somebody is moving a bin with a determination you hope will eventually make them happy.

Afterward, you put on the dark long sleeve and a clean pair of trousers, then spend several minutes looking for the cup you left within easy reach before getting in. There are only so many places it can be. You find it beside the book, make another drink, and notice that it is only three. The day has a remarkable amount left in it.

A message asks what you've been up to. You begin to type that you had a bath, then wonder why this feels like a confession. You send it. Their answer is immediate: 'At this time?'
