Firefly — Heavyweight Tee

You go outside to bring something in and stay there. The garden has become a different room while you were washing up. The edges have softened. A window across the way is brighter than you expected. Somewhere close by, a small creature is doing a large amount of work in the dry leaves.

You switch off the light behind you. This immediately improves the view and produces a message from inside asking whether you have gone to bed. You reply that you are outside. There is a pause, then a second message asking why. You consider sending a photograph of the dark, but it would require a very patient caption.

The navy tee disappears into the chair almost completely. You can just see the pale edge of a sleeve when you move. You like the feeling of having arrived without bringing much of an announcement. For once you are looking outward instead of looking for the thing you came to retrieve.

A neighbor's light comes on with enough enthusiasm to suggest that a major event has been detected. A cat walks slowly across the illuminated patch, plainly unconcerned by its promotion to major event. You wait. The light gives up. The smaller noises return.

Eventually you remember the cup on the step. It was the reason you came out. You take it inside, put it by the sink, and come back with another one. This time, when the message asks why, you have already put the phone down.
